Summer is here, and for many of us that means spending more time outdoors with our furry friends. But it's important to remember that the summer temperatures can be dangerous for pets, especially if they're not accustomed to it or are certain breeds that are not equipped to handle the heat. That's why it's crucial to take extra precautions to keep your pet happy, safe and thriving during the summer months.
One of the most important things you can do is to make sure your pet has access to plenty of fresh water. Dogs and cats can easily become dehydrated, especially if they're playing outside or exercising in the heat. Keep a bowl of fresh water available at all times, and consider adding ice cubes to help keep it cool. If you're going on a walk, bring a portable water bottle so you can refill your pet's bowl when needed.
You should also be mindful of the time of day you take your pet for walks, as the hottest part of the day is typically between noon and 4 PM. Try to avoid walking your dog during these hours and if you must walk your dog during the day, do so on grass, which is softer and tends to be cooler than paved surfaces. And, of course, always be sure to take breaks and let your pet rest in the shade.
Another important thing to consider is the type of activities you do with your pet during the summer. If you're used to going on long hikes with your dog, you may need to shorten those adventures or choose cooler trails during the summer. And, if you're planning on taking your dog swimming, be sure to supervise them closely and avoid any areas with strong currents or deep water.
Of course, it's also important to protect your pet from the sun, so if you're going to be spending time outdoors, make sure your pet has access to shade. You can also use a pet-safe sunscreen on your dog's nose, ears, and other areas that are susceptible to sunburn. Just be sure to choose a sunscreen specifically designed for animals, as human sunscreen can be toxic to pets.
It's easy to forget about our pet's dental health during the summer, but it's actually more important than ever during the hot weather. That's because bacteria can grow more easily in warm environments, which can lead to plaque and tartar buildup on your pet's teeth. This buildup can cause gum disease, tooth decay, and even serious health problems.
Brushing your pet's teeth regularly is the best way to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. But, you can also use a good quality dental product like Pebbles Furry Friends™ Breath Freshener and Plaque Tartar Control with SILVERSOL® Nano Silver. Here are some additional basic tips and reminders for beating the heat with your pets and sharing lasting memories regardless of the weather.
Dogs don't sweat like humans, so they have a harder time regulating their body temperature. Here are a few tips to help keep your dog cool during the summer:
If you notice your dog is panting excessively, drooling, or seems lethargic, it's important to take action immediately. Get them into a cool, shaded area, and offer them plenty of water. If their symptoms don't improve, call your veterinarian right away.
Cats on the other hand are very good at regulating their own body temperature, but they can still suffer from heat stress. Here are a few things you can do to keep your cat cool and comfortable during the summer:
With just a little extra care and attention, you can help your furry friend stay cool and comfortable all summer long. Remember to always consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about your pet's health.
